Are You Really Surprised?

So, a mob of Iraqis torch, beat, mutilate and hang corpses belonging to four American defense contractors on the same day that five U.S. soldiers were killed in a roadside bombing. U.S. media was shocked and awed. Despicable, horrible, horrifying. While the killings are indeed gruesome and God help the families of those killed, I would like to ask what on Earth do you expect? These are people who suffered under 13 years of sanctions, constant and consistent bombing throughout the 1990s and persistent random trigger-happy killing of civilians by U.S. troops in the last year. Depleted uranium is destroying children and the future of Iraq. Joblessness, power outages, lack of communications -- no phones in 80 percent of the country -- and lawlessness. You want candy and flowers? ...

Principles Are Supreme

When we launched Weekly Independent on August 3, 2001, we vowed to make the journal a guardian of the people's rights. This meant defending the fledgling democracy in Pakistan from onslaughts of the mighty military establishment, always waiting in the wings to derail it, and at the same time exposing corruption and dishonesty on the part of the high and mighty. Anyone dedicated to the ideals of our founding fathers who wanted to see Pakistan as a modern democratic state, with the Army being subservient to the elected Parliament, would endorse the editorial policy of the magazine. We have tried our best to maintain independence of the Weekly, and would continue to withstand the government pressure as long as we are allowed to pursue an independent policy ...

U.S. Forces Slaughter Iraqis at Dawn

American troops slaughtered more than one hundred Iraqi civilians, most of them killed while asleep inside their homes, at the small hours of Friday, June 13, 2003, eyewitnesses told IslamOnline.net (IOL). We buried more than 80 of our sons but are still puzzled what pushed the Americans to massacre our people. We are far away from Baghdad and no fighting has been reported here. We have no training camps as alleged by the occupation forces. No Baathists. No nothing ...

Fighting Terror with Terror

Israel has been fighting "terror" with "terror". It is impossible to suggest that Israel is worried about Palestinian civilians when it launches raids like the one on June 10. Authorizing helicopter gunships to launch missiles into crowded Palestinian streets? Only a ruthless government would authorize such attacks ...

Credibility and Pre-Emptive War Doctrine

In an address to the United Nations, U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell presented forged documents as key evidence while making the United States' defining statement for preemptive war in Iraq. Parts of a British dossier, highly touted by Tony Blair, were fraudulent and taken from a California college student's research. The U.S. also allegedly possessed information describing hundreds of WMD sites in Iraq, detailing kinds and quantities of chemicals stored there. But now that the main fighting in the war has concluded and the U.S. is ostensibly controlling Iraq, no traces of WMD have been discovered anywhere in the country for several weeks ...

The Mobile Lies

Colin Powell claimed that "the two alleged mobile biological weapons labs, which are being studied by allied inspectors now in Iraq, are the same ones he described to the world last Feb. 5 at a U.N. presentation which was the result of four days and four nights of meetings with the CIA." "I stand behind that presentation," he said. Senior Iraqi officials of the al-Kindi Research, Testing, Development, and Engineering facility in Mosul were shown pictures of the mobile production trailers, and they claimed that the trailers were used to produce hydrogen chemically for artillery weather balloons. Artillery balloons are essentially balloons that are sent up into the atmosphere and relay information on wind direction and speed, allowing more accurate artillery fire. Crucially, these systems need to be mobile. The Observer has discovered that not only did the Iraq military have such a system at one time, but that it was actually sold to them by the British. Other experts who have examined the evidence agree and have cast doubt over the Bush administration's assertions ...

The Sanctions Game

For thirteen years, the United States has been authoritative in maintaining some of the strictest, most closely regulated sanctions in the history of economic warfare. Now that the U.S. has secured Iraqi resources for itself through widely unpopular, unilateralist might, the Bush administration suddenly wants to lift the sanctions so that colossal companies beholden to Washington can begin the process of developing Iraq's resources. The Bush administration's doctrine of what's-good-for- the-U.S.-is-good-for-the-world is once again on display. But now France and Russia are in the spoiler's role, interfering in Washington's plans for the speedy privatization of Iraq. The situation, then, is quite simple: The world's most powerful countries are acting in their own national self-interest in trying to secure massive resource contracts in a geopolitically vital state that will doubtless remain one of the key regions as the 21st century unfolds. The status of Iraqi sanctions is the focal point in a game of power politics in which the Iraqi people are the only real losers ...

Mirage of Iraq's Weapons of Mass Destruction

In late August 2002, I listened with trepidation to President Bush's burgeoning false allegations about Iraq's nuclear military capability. Even then, one could discern that the sustained use of misinformation to support the invasion of Iraq showed that the President's claims were not based on any facts. I, having worked with Iraq's nuclear program for thirty years, reacted with a series of articles expounding on the fact that Iraq had ceased its nuclear weapons program at the start of the 1991 war. I refuted the claims and evidence most famously, or infamously, branded by Secretary of State Colin Powell to the Security Council in February 2003 in which Powell argued that Iraq had rejuvenated its nuclear weapons program after the Gulf War. Bush, Blair and their senior officials lied to their people, knowingly, and waged a criminal invasion in lieu of this reason. Is this the democracy model for a "liberated" Iraq? ...

Resignation Letter from U.S. Diplomat

Mary Wright's (deputy chief of mission at the U.S. embassy in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia) letter of resignation to Secretary of State Colin Powell: "I have served my country for almost thirty years in some of the most isolated and dangerous parts of the world. I want to continue to serve America. However, I do not believe in the policies of this Administration and cannot defend or implement them. It is with heavy heart that I must end my service to America and therefore resign due to the Administration's policies" ...

The Europe - U.S. Divide

When a state in the Middle East now steps out of line, as Iraq did, it will be the United States that works to restrain it, not the United Nations. If a state in Asia steps out of line, it will also be the United States that will work to restrain it. The entire globe is now within the United States' sphere of influence, which has made the U.N. more impotent than ever. This is what has so enraged Europe. By increasing its power outside the restraints of the United Nations, the U.S. has further weakened the power of all states still working within the United Nations ...

America's War of Liberation

It's easy for a reporter to predict doom, especially after a brutal war that lacked all international legitimacy. But catastrophe usually waits for optimists in the Middle East, especially for false optimists who invade oil-rich nations with ideological excuses and high-flown moral claims and accusations, such as weapons of mass destruction, which are still unproved. So I'll make an awful prediction. That America's war of liberation is over. Iraq's war of liberation from the Americans is about to begin. In other words, the real and frightening story starts now. It's going wrong, faster than anyone could have imagined. The army of liberation has already turned into the army of occupation. The Shias are threatening to fight the Americans, to create their own war of liberation ...

Postwar Objectives in Iraq

With the fall of Saddam Hussein from power, the United States government is busy preparing for its postwar occupation. Current plans call for putting U.S. officials in charge of Iraq under the name of the Office of Reconstruction and Humanitarian Assistance in Iraq led by former U.S. general Jay Garner. Their stated objectives are immense, and, until they have been achieved, Washington will be forced to keep its occupation in place. In addition to the important oil concerns, the U.S. may also use Iraq as a strategic base for the continuation of its policy of power politics, brought into the fore with the election of the Bush administration. Administration officials have come out openly criticizing the governments of both Syria and Iran, two states that border Iraq ...

Israel's Nuclear Assets

Although Israel has often said that it would not be the first to introduce nuclear weapons into the region, Israeli officials have often publicly implied that certain circumstances - especially the use of chemical weapons by their enemies - would elicit a nuclear response. In fact, evidence indicates that Israel might launch a pre-emptive nuclear strike under certain conditions. The size and number of bunkers indicates that Israel's nuclear arsenal is larger than many estimate. If Israel's nuclear gravity bombs are similar to those of the USA, then their approximate dimensions are 4 m long, 0.5 m wide and about 350 kg in weight. Assuming the devices are stacked three high, that they are only stored along the wall of the bunker so the bunker centre can be used for testing and maintenance and that each bomb is given a space of 5 m x l m x l m, then the larger bunkers could conservatively house more than 30 weapons each. Consequently, just the five large bunkers at this site could alone easily store about 150 weapons. This is more than other reports state and supports indications that the Israeli arsenal may contain as many as 400 nuclear weapons with a total combined yield of 50 MT (see JIR Special Report No. 14, p.15) ...

Reshaping The Middle East

Phase two of the Bush administration's long publicized plan of reshaping the Middle East is now underway. After removing Saddam Hussein from power and gaining a major foothold in the center of the Middle East, the administration has now redirected its verbal threats to Syria. Syria has long been a thorn in the side of the major U.S. ally in the region: Israel. Moreover, Damascus also annoyed Washington in its outspoken refusal to support a U.S. invasion in Iraq ...

The Israelization of The U.S.A

The USA is becoming like Israel in many ways and this portents many dangers to Mexico and Mexican-Americans in the USA. The current war against Iraq and the tactics being utilized against the Iraqi civilian population by US soldiers were learned from the Israeli Armed Forces. Last year US officials announced that Israeli security forces trained American soldiers in the techniques of urban warfare. Israel's thirty-five-year occupation of Palestine enabled the Jewish state to perfect tactics that US troops will need in "house to house" combat in Baghdad [Iraq]. In addition, Israel has been busy training a large number of major police departments on how to deal with US "Palestinian" type minorities, which we presume includes Chicanos, Blacks and American-Indians [Native Americans]. Here in Los Angeles, the newly appointed police chief , William Bratton, spent 6 days in Israel getting training on how to deal with "terrorists." Chief Bratton came from New York City and is married to a prominent Jewish attorney ...

Delicate Revelations

Whether Israel was directly or indirectly involved in the Sept. 11 [2001] terrorist tragedy--or otherwise had advance knowledge of the impending attacks--the truth is that American Free Press [AFP] has led the media in reporting news about this "delicate" subject that no other media voice would touch. Here's an overview of AFP's pioneering coverage by date of issue ...

Bush & CIA in 9-11 Terror Complicity

The explosive story of the 5 suspicious Israelis seen celebrating while filming the attacks on the World Trade Center was first reported nationally in American Free Press shortly after September 11 [2001]. A deal was struck between Israeli and U.S. government officials after 71 days and the five Israelis were put on a plane, and deported to Israel. The detained Israelis discussed their experience in America on an Israeli talk show after their return home. One of the men said: "The fact of the matter is we are coming from a country that experiences terror daily. Our purpose was to document the [9-11] event " ...

U.S. Military and The Journalists

Is there some element in the American military that has come to hate the press and wants to take out journalists based in Baghdad? I don't know why they are trying to target journalists. There are awful scenes around me. There's a Reuters tent just a few yards away from me where people are in tears. It makes you realise how vulnerable you are. What are we supposed to do? How are we supposed to carry on if American shells are targeting Western journalists? ...

Winning Isn't Everything

When the United States "wins" the war in Iraq, the Bush administration and war advocates, ranging from the naively idealistic neocons to former pseudo-lefties like Nat Hentoff, better hope it's not the kind of victory enjoyed in Afghanistan. Because if it is, in 18 months time American youngsters will still be dying there, and the country will be in a state of virtual anarchy ...

Use of Depleted Uranium Weapons

British and American coalition forces are using depleted uranium (DU) shells in the war against Iraq and deliberately flouting a United Nations resolution which classifies the munitions as illegal weapons of mass destruction. DU contaminates land, causes ill-health and cancers among the soldiers using the weapons, the armies they target and civilians, leading to birth defects in children ...
